A History of Safety?

As history relates to us, Man's quest for safety reaches far back to nearly those earliest beginnings of all that it is we know. In that time those two we are most familiar with were perfectly content to run around butt naked having a generally fabulous time doing pretty much whatever they wanted [with one important exception] without the need for concern for matters of personal safety.

Adam & Eve 'Naked'

With the exception of those earliest days in 'The Garden' when all things were at their most pleasant and even what we now know to be the nastiest of creatures were quite content not to eat you - well, at least until after that 'apple incident' - Mans' quest for safety has been an ongoing adventure. Now, following 'The Big 'Deal' things started changing a bit and 'Man' kind of came to the conclusion that maybe certain modifications were in order and 'the two' began, in their own way, to make some minor but, what were eventually to become, very significant changes.

Adam & Eve w/ Leaves

As one might guess, these new additions did provide for some degree of 'safety' in some important areas but still failed to properly address other recent developments in the arena of safety like the the effect those rather sharp pointed antlers had upon the body if it happened to get in their way. Not to mention the fact that leaves did very little, if anything, to prevent the other larger animals, who 'used to be so nice', from making a gourmet meal out of you. After some time [quite a long time, really] 'Man' came to the realization that the carcasses of those once nice animals that were now continuously intent on turning 'him' into lunch really did have some use after all. This new discovery resulted in the emergence on-the-scene of the very latest in personal safety apparel.

Caveman & Woman

Here was a significant improvement over the 'old leaves' in that they provided greater protection from things that poked you or animals that tried to carry away pieces of you in their mouth as they got the 'clothes' instead. This new development also had the added advantage of providing some extra warmth in those cold caves [at least when you weren't busy 'exercising'] and they stayed on quite a bit better than the leaves when you were out. The enthusiasm for this latest development in the personal safety arena was such that it remained the state-of-the-art for many thousands of years and it was not until 'Man' perfected the art of mining, refining and forging metals that things changed significantly. It was with the recent development of advanced slicing and dicing implements such as the sword that 'Mans' attention once again became focused on the concern for personal safety and it was at that time that the concept of the 'personal safety suit' came into being.

King Arthur in Shining Armor

Now here was a development worthy of consideration as it provided the first 'full body' protection against most of the forms of slicing, hacking and bludgeoning so prevalent in the workplace at the time. It was, however, not without its disadvantages. From historical accounts it has been learned that, in order to provide an adequate safety margin, these 'suits' needed to be somewhat thick and, as a result, were extremely heavy to wear around not to mention the fact that it required the help of as many as three 'assistants' go get into or out of one of these.

Putting on Armor

All donning and doffing notwithstanding, it appears that while you were in one of these things, the lack of mobility rendered you of little use for anything other than riding around on a horse hacking people into tiny bits, bashing their heads in or performing other acts of general killing which is far less acceptable in the workplace of today than it used to be unless you happen to be employed as a knight. With these disadvantages, the invention of the arrow [which could pierce these things] and bullets and bombs, history moved us into yet another era of personal safety far beyond just the 'body suit', namely:

Sherman Tank Clearly a safety unit to be reckoned with. Not terribly useful in the workplace but sure to make the morning and afternoon commute just a bit more interesting - "Go ahead, cut me off and make my day!". Fortunately, the human race has mellowed somewhat with time and, no longer quite so determined to find increasingly effective means of 'offing' one another, we have turned to more productive and less harmful pursuits and leads us to the ultimate in personal safety equipment:

Suit on the Moon
Salute in a Suit

And you can even drive to work in it...

Moon Buggy

And if that suit 'Just seems too bulky' - Thanks to technology we have our latest model:

Shuttle Suit

Note the 'safety shoes'.
